Ella!! I loved this! I’ve actually been wanting to learn about CTP’s since you mentioned it in summer, so I’m so glad you wrote this piece. I learnt SO much & love the research you did in your MSc! Also, I loved the point on the debate between development as freedom and development as economic development. That was so so thought provoking. I definitely agree with you that development should be a balance of both. Thank you for mentioning CTP’s and how this can actually help us make the world even a bit better.

I love what you said about decolonising aid and the importance of context & AGENCY when thinking about methods of poverty alleviation, so so real!

I also learnt about MacAskill during my MSc, specifically in relation to the topic “longtermism” (which basically discusses the importance of the longterm future of humanity)!

Temi! THANK YOU!

I’m so glad this piece was helpful, especially since we talked about CTPs in the summer, it means a lot that you took the time to read it. And yes, that debate between development as freedom vs. economic growth is such a fascinating (and ongoing) conversation. I feel like both perspectives have merit, but without agency and contextual understanding, even the best economic policies can fall flat.

I love that you also engaged with the idea of decolonizing aid! The more I research, the more I see how crucial it is to center local agency in development work, so much harm has been done by imposing one-size-fits-all solutions without listening to the communities they’re meant to serve.

MacAskill & longtermism!! Such an interesting framework. Did you find the argument convincing? I think there’s value in considering future generations, but I sometimes wonder if longtermism risks overlooking urgent, present-day inequalities. Would love to hear your take!
